Charles Freehling, of St. Croix, was given the Charles Taylor master mechanic award for 30 years of FAA-certified maintenance, and 50 years in aviation experience. Freehling’s aviation work began in 1965 in the Air Force. He worked on airboats for several years and became the Director of Maintenance for the Virgin Islands Seaplane Shuttle, which in turn led him to become director of maintenance for Bohlke in 1989. The Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award is named in honor of Mr. Charles Taylor, the first aviation mechanic in powered flight. The Charles Taylor "Master Mechanic" Award recognizes the lifetime accomplishments of senior mechanics. Mr. Taylor served as the Wright brothers' mechanic and is credited with designing and building the engine for their first successful aircraft.
