Below
is a letter from PAMA President Dale Forton written to President Obama
in response to the President's remarks
at Alcoa on
June 28, 2011 and at the June
29 Press Conference
as they relate to Aviation Maintenance. The letter is available for
download at the bottom of the page.
Dear Mr. President:
On June 28th you visited Alcoa, the world's premier aerospace supply plant, and stated, “The idea is to create jobs now and to make sure America stays on the cutting edge of manufacturing for years to come.” This issue is especially important to the Aviation Maintenance Industry that is still recovering from the recession and needs American support.
However, your comments at the press conference the following day regarding corporate jet tax breaks weaken consumer confidence in general aviation. Over 200,000 licensed Aviation Maintenance Technicians (AMTs) and many others are a part of this industry and are affected negatively by these statements.
The tax changes involving accelerated depreciation have helped this industry as well as this country. I hope that in your upcoming negotiations with House and Senate leaders you continue to emphasize the importance of American jobs in the aerospace industry. Please be aware of the impact your decisions regarding accelerated depreciations will have on the industry, the potential new workforce and its current workers.
The purpose of PAMA, the Professional Aviation Maintenance Association, is to promote a high degree of professionalism among aviation maintenance personnel, while improving methods, skills, learning, and achievement in the field of aviation maintenance. Any assistance or resources PAMA and I can offer as aid in your decisions is here at your request.
Respectfully,
